Professor Luc Steels, MUHAI project Scientific Coordinator for Venice International University, will hold a session entitled “History Lessons for the Future: Toward a Human-centric governance of AI” at the 2-hour online symposium organized by the initiative “RRI in Horizon Europe”.

In the year 2020, the realm of Artificial Intelligence has led the science policy agenda of EU institutions and beyond. In a time where research innovation funders and promoters expect responsibility and accountability in AI programs and projects, it is important to shed light on the way said technologies are researched, designed, regulated, and deployed.

  • How can we safeguard that AI research and innovation take democratic values sufficiently into account?
  • How are citizens protected from impacts of AI of which they may not even be aware?
  • What does this mean for applying principles of precaution?
  • To which extent can we trust the research communities and industry to self-regulate itself when it comes to creating level playing fields?

These questions regarding the new policy challenges faced by Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be addressed and discussed during the webinar. Along with Luc Steels, key experts in the field speaking at the event are Max Erik Tegmark, Virginia Dignum, Cecilie Mathiesen, and Walter van de Velde. Ellen-Marie Forsberg & Alexander Gerber will host and moderate the discussion.
