Sulle Acque | On Waters

On Waters AG

Exhibit | November 11 – December 11, 2022 | Church of Santa Maria delle Penitenti, Venice

On Waters is an immersive exhibition born from the AquaGranda project, a Digital Community Memory created in the face of the catastrophic inundation in Venice in November 2019. The project aimed at collecting and examining concrete case studies to assess the role of digital archives in mitigating climate change.

Quoting Luc Steels, MUHAI Scientific Coordinator: "After the catastrophic inundation of Venice in 2019, Venetians tried to make sense of the destruction of their habitat through narrations shared on social media. The massive archive of these narrations assembled by the EU Odycceus project has given the MUHAI project an opportunity to study narrative-based understanding and imagine human-centric AI technologies that support communities in the creation of a collective memory."

The exhibition invites citizens and Venice visitors to remember together the November 2019 flood through an immersive experience that takes the public back to the heart of one of the most tangible socio-natural events related to climate change.

Luc Steels was the Artistic Director of the first edition of the digital exhibit, Costanza Sartoris and Erica Villa have curated the current physical edition and Carlo Santagiustina, MUHAI researcher with VIU, is the Scientific Supervisor and supervisor of the methods and digital technologies, as well as co-ideator of the Aquagranda archive.

The exhibit will be open Tuesday through Sunday, from 2 to 6 p.m.
Free admission
